When there is an injury, such as trauma or acute/chronic infections, the body responds to produce the necessary cells and cycles of the healing process. Platelets can play a crucial role in periodontal regeneration as they are reservoirs of growth factors and cytokines which are key factors for regeneration of bone and maturation of soft tissue. PRF (platelet rich fibrin) is prepared from the patient’s own blood and centrifuged in special calibrated machines. After the centrifuge cycle, PRF is collected at the top of the test tube (yellow membrane-like). Augmented bone - autogenous, allograft, or zenograft - can be mixed with fibrin concentrate. Because this augmentation technique is directly from the patient’s own blood, it is safe and there is no risk of post-operative infection or cross-contamination. PRF contains rich in growth factors which are essential for maturation and fast healing.
